Matthews to Captain 2026 US Olympic Hockey Team
Auston Matthews will proudly lead the United States men's hockey team at the 2026 Winter Olympics, a decision that underscores his preeminent position as the nation's top hockey talent. Matthews, already a distinguished captain for the NHL's Toronto Maple Leafs, previously helmed the U.S. squad during the 2025 4 Nations Face-Off tournament, where they secured a respectable second place behind their Canadian rivals.

He has twice achieved the remarkable feat of scoring 60 goals in a single season and narrowly missed reaching the 70-goal mark in the 2023-24 campaign. However, a question mark lingers over his performance in high-stakes playoff situations. In career Game 7 appearances – a scenario analogous to the elimination games that follow the preliminary round in Olympic play – Matthews has yet to score a goal across six such contests, registering only three assists and a negative-four plus/minus rating.
Boston Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy and Matthew Tkachuk have been appointed as alternate captains, providing additional leadership and experience on the ice alongside Matthews.
